Christian Herr: New Strings

Christian Herr: New Strings

Exhibition Dates: November 7 through December 27, 2008

Herr’s relationship with his folkloric family tree is illustrated through the inter-connective relationships between the characters who represent his family. Unanswered questions are exposed, as floating heads of colonizers and Indians fill the “sky” in a large-scale painting serving as the lexicon for the series. One can experience elements of the Herr Family oral history through Christian’s characterized paintings and drawings. Semblances of truth take the form of arrows and flames...dotted lines represent connections between events and great uncles, aunts and cousins who bear witness to his history. Other paintings and wood plaques explore contemporary relationship themes as in “Crosstown Lovers”. Throughout this body of work, Herr develops surrogate relationships with the past and present. Viewers are given a rare opportunity to consider state history through the eyes of a brilliant and comic personal iconography that has solidified into a unique language.

Christian Herr received his BFA from West Chester University in 2007 and the following year attended attended Millersville University as an emerging artist in residence. He currently resides in Lancaster City.
